5 Must do things on Maui’s North Shore

Maui’s North Shore is one of the most beautiful and still untouched places I have ever been too, and perhaps one of the most untouched parts in all of the Hawaiian Islands. Wild waterfalls collecting into lava pools, huge rainbows every day, the iconic Pe’ahi surf break where the famous Jaws competition happens in the winter!

1. Paia town has a few restaurants and and shops that are worth spending an hour or two checking out and supporting local businesses. Walking distance from Paia town is Baldwin beach with beautiful blue waters and calm waves, perfect for just wading out.

2. Hana Highway- Rent a car and drive along the scenic Hana highway as it twists and turns on the side of massive volcanic mountains. Located along the rainy side of the island hundreds of waterfalls tumble down nearly vertical cliffs. Be sure to stop at one of the roadside stands and pic up fresh fruit, coconut, or smoothie to quench your thirst. Going all the way to Hana isn’t necessary but be sure to at least spend an hour each way on the highway so you get catch beautiful glimpses on each side.

3. Waterfall swimming- Hana highway is criss crossed with trails that lead to stunning lava pools filled by the icy water if nearby waterfalls. This stunning mixture highlights both incredible sides of Maui once shaped by fire now cooled by water which feeds the incredible plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. Always be mindful of private property and don’t park in undesignated spots (we want to preserve the land DUH!) The one pictured below had a small parking area, I had been hiking near it and met some local guys my age who were headed there. The 30 ft leap from the rocks into the icy water was the perfect way to cool down after an afternoon hike.

4. Mama’s Fish House- Perhaps the most famous place to eat on all of Maui like the owner Karen Christenson says “book your flight, book your hotel, book Mama’s” This incredible restaurant serves fish caught by local fisherman same day for 50 years. Booking out 6 months in advance it is well worth your time to see what everyone has been raving about at Mama’s Fish House. The cocktails are amazing too ;)

5. Pe’ahi- The famed Jaws surf break with some of the biggest waves in the world comes alive November- January depending on the weather conditions. You can catch glimpses of the famous lookout from the highway but I recomend taking the 3 mile detour to the lookout to get the best views of this amazing spot. 4x4 vehicles are the only way to reach the lookout but when the waves are pumping you may be able to catch a ride for a few dollars. Seeing the force of the ocean at Jaws is like nothing else in the world.

Let me know if you get a chance to explore Mauis beautiful North Shore and some of your favorite spots! Aloha xx
